For a few months now or possibly for even a year I have had an obsession with photographing food and of course eating it. I'm intrigued by the weird and wonderful combinations that grace so many cafe's and restaurant's menus and I have surprised myself by being so excited to step out of my comfort zone and try them- thus sending me into a little foodie craze! I know it can be irritating for some of my friends, both whilst we are out on a catch-up date and I insist on being a happy snapper or even on Facebook with all the foodie photos that I post, so I came to the conclusion that instead of changing what I love to do, I should adapt it to- 'Vanilla Roses' creating this public platform where I can post and write freely whilst not 'subjecting' people to what I love (personally I think they're jealous that they never got to the new corner cafe or dared the banana french toast before I bragged about it BUT that's a whole other debate ;-)).

I'm a twenty something year old girl living in the small city of Durban, South Africa. I still live at home with my parents and my brother who is 6 years older than me lives in the big city of Boston, USA. He's been away from home for almost 8 years- do I consider myself an only child? 9/10 times, yes, I do but when we are all together as a happy family I fall into the 'baby' category for the duration of the holi. I have a gorgeous Italian boyfriend for 2 and a half years and I belong to a few social groups- I have lots of close friends but only a handful of best friends who I spend most of my spare time with.
I completed my undergrad BA English & Communications Degree in 2011 and after a 10 month gap 'year' I went back to college and obtained my BA Honours Degree in Brand Leadership & Communications. I kindly ask that you overlook my numerous slang words such as: 'delish', 'omw (oh my word); holi etc... (I will be adding a glossary of "Erin's words" at some stage so you'll always be on my page ;-) (no pun intended!)
I am currently employed full time as a marketing assistant for a company that provides insight, commentary and profiles on the South African Fast Moving Consumer Goods Environment and the major retail and wholesale players.
Before I forget- I should just briefly explain where Vanilla Roses (the name) originated. When you say the words 'vanilla' you can almost smell it/ taste it and it has such a distinct and unique smell- it has become one of my favourite scents. I love to bake and use vanilla essence where ever possible. It amazes me how a few drops of vanilla extract in baking or simply leaving a pod in the sugar bowl can transform something so 'plain' to something so mouthwatering and yummy! Roses- what girl doesn't love them (sunflowers are another big favourite of mine) - but I love roses and their multi-layers, strong yet sweet smell and the sheer beauty they possess- they just make my heart so happy.
And in a nutshell- that's me- Erin Kate Monks- Vanilla Roses x
